Say กับ Tell ต่างกันยังไง
คำว่า say กับ tell ทั้งสองคำนี้ ทุกคนคงรู้กันดีอยู่แล้วว่าแปลว่า 'บอก'
แต่เดี๋ยวก่อนคะ ในภาษาอังกฤษวิธีการใช้ทั้ง 2 คำนี้ต่างกันนะ มาดูกัน
Say / Tell
say และ tell มีความหมายเหมือนกันในภาษาไทย แปลว่า บอก
แต่มีวิธีใช้แตกต่างกันดังนี้
Say ใช้กับคำพูดที่พูดออกจากปากผู้พูด (a person’s actual words) และใช้ในประโยค Indirect Speech ซึ่งไม่ต้องการกรรม เช่น
He said, ‘I shall go home.’
He said that he would go home.
tell ใช้กับประโยค Indirect Speech ซึ่งต้องการกรรม เช่น
He told me that he would go home.
Say มีรูปประโยคที่ใช้ดังนี้
1.to say something to somebody about something
- What did the doctor say to you?
- He said nothing to me about is journey.
2.to say +’that clause
- Mary said that she didn’t feel well.
- He said (that) he was tired.
Tell มีรูปประโยคที่ใช้ดังนี้
1. to tell somebody something
- Tell me your name, please.
2. to tell somebody + clause
- Tell me what you’ve been doing.
3. to tell somebody about something
- I shall tell you about my holidays.
to tell somebody to/not to do something.
- They told me to sit here.
4.สำนวนต่างๆที่ใช้กับ Verb to ‘tell’
a. to tell the truth / to tell a lie
- He always tells (us) the truth.
b. to tell a story (a joke, the news, the facts, a secret, the price)
- Why don’t you tell Steve the joke you told me yesterday?
- Jim has already told the good news to his wife.
c. to tell about experiences, plans, etc.
- Please tell me about your experience in Australia.
